Taken from Silk Road Assassins - State Of Ruin https://planet.mu/releases/state-of-ruin/Silk Road Assassins, a trio consisting of Tom E Vercetti, Chemist and Lovedr0id, return to Planet Mu with their debut full-length 'State Of Ruin' two years after their first EP 'Reflection Spaces'.The trio recorded over two years, working together to start with, then across different studios and via the internet when their lives became more separated. They also finessed the album at Abbey Road studios, making use of some short time to add in extra layers. The three producers day jobs are in production music, music designed and created specifically for film and games, and this album uses these skills to explore the musical forms that they love. The album explores how trap and grime's minimalist form can be built and curved into musical architecture: elegant, opaque and layered, turning the sound into lush melodic world-building.The work put into the album is revealed upon repeated listens, every sound on this record feels built to sit within it's delicate ecosystem. The fundamentals of the music are given their own sense of purpose: hand claps spray, bells tumble, guitars splinter and lush melodies waft over and fill the track's spaces like light, glinting across snapping, crisp rhythms and deep bass tones. The album also features two Planet Mu alumini, Kuedo who features on 'Split Matter' brings some of his bitter-sweet shimmering melodies and on 'Shadow Realm' Russian producers WWWINGS give the music a violent metallic edge, providing the record with an epic and unexpected twist towards the end.Silk Road Assassins music is built to last, and a pleasure to indulge in.

I like this melody. Just the right amount of what I hear Dance Hall influence along with a touch of 'laid back' synthesizer sounds.

What happens when you get a bunch of professional music producers in a (chat)room and sign them to Planet Mu?
Well if those producers go by the name Silk Road Assassins you get State of Ruin, an album whose name is very much a misnomer. The trio are certainly aiming for something dystopian, mining the same rich vein of unnerving grime and trap that produced the likes of Kuedo (who features on a track) and Mr Mitch. But it’s all too. well produced. When they’re not Silk Road Assassins Tom E Vercetti, Chemist and Lovedr0id work on TV and video games. And it really shows. Every sound has been fine tuned to within an inch of its life to elicit and specific emotional response. TV and especially video games lean on sound to fill in some of the emotional blanks and get your serotonin firing.
‘Split Matter’, the track where Kuedo appears, is so shiny it's almost reflective. The bass on ‘Shadow Realm’ has the sleek edges of a modern phone. The moaning synths on ‘Thorns’ give ‘Everything In Its Right Place’ a run for its money. None of this is bad, and the sound design on State of Ruin is almost certainly going to reward multiple listens, but it does leave me feeling a bit cold. The genres they're interpreting; grime, trap, dancehall, are often sleek but never this excessively.
They do successfully borrow the form of each style, it’s always obvious what a track is drawing from, but there approach is a bit too hard-faced for my tastes.
Boomkat Product Review:
Sci-fi-styled, synthy grime & drill mutations from Tom E Vercetti, Chemist and Lovedr0id a.k.a. Silk Road Assassins, with guest spots from Kuedo and WWWINGS (a.k.a. Ars Was Taken).
Since their debut LP ‘Reflections’, SRA have really refined their sound with razor sharp chops and exacting poignancy, making ‘State of Ruin’ their defitnsve calling card.
With a manacled grasp of cutting edge UK drill and grime rhythms, and a sublime feel for melancholy yet adrenal sensation, their 2nd significant group showing plays out like the soundtrack to a noir thriller set in mazy London bits and ends, with all the road level romance and violence, and ariel, multi-storey/storied nocturnal connotations that comes with the territory.

Silk Road Assassins have been chipping away at State Of Ruin ever since they dropped their first two EPs back in 2016. It’s safe to say that the hard work has paid off. On their debut full-length record the trio of Chemist, Lovedr0id and Tom E. Vercetti come through with a collection of finely-crafted futuro-club fodder. A mix of core styles - the Sadboy beats of Yung Lean, Gobstopper Records’ post-grime innovations and Metro Boomin’s spacious trap sound - are finessed with the detailed production you’d expect from a group who all have day jobs in sound design. Guest spots from Kuedo and WWWINGS only add to the vibe. All in all State Of Ruin is a perfect Planet Mu record.
